How it all started
It
was 1999. The seeds of an ambitious enterprise were sown in Amadpore,
a small village in Gujarat. There was a general lack of proper facilities,
infrastructure and counsel for the Agricultural sector in India.
Ajit Desai, a simple farmer with a vision decided to take the matter
in his own hands and fill this gap. He translated his frustration
into a movement that is today redefining the norms and introducing
world-class concepts in cultivating, packaging and supplying fruits
and vegetables in India.
Ajit Desai embarked upon the challenging task of setting up best-in-the-world
infrastructure that would redefine the Fruit and Vegetable business
in India, in a remote village so as to be able to export. The task
was daunting. After all, he was only a simple farmer with little
or no exposure to the complexities of business, technology or international
markets. But Ajit Desai was confident and Desai Cold Storage was
incorporated.
Along with his brother, Ajit Desai decided to first educate himself
on international best practices on farming, packaging and transportation.
He toured internationally and attended lectures, seminars and trade
shows to build business critical know-how. A protagonist of “practical
research”, he initiated this concept even before major Indian
corporates were treading the path of
innovation carefully.
Ajit Desai’s vision has come true. Within a span of eight
years, he has built the best in class infrastructure in India, created
a strong, more informed farmer community and built the most exemplary
model for contract farming. This goes to prove what can be achieved
by setting a goal, applying vision and working hard to achieve it.
